September 1, 1862.  Received a letter from Winston by Mr Hyas telling of the death of "Toady" by an accident with his gun while hunting.  In the afternoon I went to Tina's & got the mail, Willie & Lewis began studying with our boys to day.

 

[Rebecca] September, 1, 1862. A fine morng. Mrs Stephens’ boys begin to study under my direction. Tivie receives a letter from Winston telling her of the sudden death of Lewis Gaines by the accidental discharge of his gun! I receive a cheerful letter from Davis.

[Rebecca] September 2, 1862. A warm day – heavy shower in the P.M. George has been lame several days – poultice to-day for a stone bruise. Henry goes to town for some articles in the Office.
